Forklifts Queue at Dispatch. Look at Dwell Time.
2026-10-08
Several forklifts collect near dispatch during the busy hour. A vehicle count cannot tell the supervisor whether the constraint is vehicle availability, late material or the loading sequence. The next useful question is where each forklift spends its time.
I. A stopped forklift is not necessarily waiting
A dispatch visit may include loading, checking, queueing and a brief stop. Long zone dwell alone does not establish waste. Compare the location interval with the work order and dispatch timestamps to narrow the part that needs investigation.
ORBRO forklift tracking supports vehicle-level location and movement records for comparison with operational systems. Work completion criteria and integration fields are defined for the site's workflow.
II. Draw zones around process stages
Separate the travel aisle, material staging, approach area, loading zone and parking area. Combining an aisle and a queue mixes transit time with waiting. Extremely narrow boundaries can also produce unstable classifications, so test them where vehicles actually drive and stop.
Review entry and exit times alongside job allocation. Validate the UWB update interval and reception under the intended vehicle count, metal structures and loaded movements.
III. Examine the distribution, not just the average
A lower average can hide a small group of vehicles with long waits. Look at long-dwell visits, vehicles present by time of day and repeated trips. Compare similar dispatch volumes and assignments, keeping breaks and maintenance separate.
Late material arrival suggests checking preparation. Delayed departure after work finishes suggests reviewing the handover. These are investigation leads; staff must compare them with the job record before assigning a cause.
IV. Test one operational change
Change one staging position or allocation rule at a representative dispatch zone. Compare throughput, dwell patterns and repeat movements. Check whether the queue simply moved into another aisle.
Tracking is an observation tool here; vehicle control and route decisions remain with site procedures. Bring the dispatch drawing and job-record fields to ORBRO to design a focused trial.
