Your Factory Layout Changed. Did Your RTLS Map?

A production cell moves, an aisle widens, and the next shift sees material apparently sitting in yesterday's staging area. The movement may be correct while the map or zone definition is outdated. Before replacing tags, check whether the location system still describes the floor people actually use.

I. Check the drawing and positioning separately

Replacing a background drawing does not automatically update the positioning configuration. An incorrect scale, rotation or reference point can place valid coordinates in the wrong aisle. Relocating metal racks may also change reception conditions.

ORBRO RTLS Manager supports map preparation, positioning settings, device monitoring and configuration history. The site still needs a practical acceptance check after a layout change.

II. Test the changed route under working conditions

Mark relocated equipment, revised aisles and new zone boundaries on a before-and-after plan. Record receiver moves separately. Select a route that crosses the changed boundary and includes the places where operators stop.

Check known reference points, travel in both directions, loaded movements and peak-shift traffic. A quiet walk-through can miss conditions created by real loads and moving equipment. Decide whether the task needs a coordinate or simply a reliable zone label before setting acceptance criteria.

III. Preserve the meaning of historical reports

Splitting one staging area into two changes the denominator behind counts and dwell-time reports. Keep an effective date and a mapping between old and new zone definitions. Compare periods with similar throughput and operating hours, and identify figures affected by the definition change.

A useful change record contains the drawing version, approver, application time and observed test results. Update the asset-to-tag register whenever a tag moves to another asset.

IV. Confirm the operator can act on the result

Pilot the revised configuration on one representative process. Ask the operator to locate an asset using the screen, then record boundary errors, stale positions and reception gaps. Expand only when the result is usable on the floor.

RTLS map maintenance belongs in layout change control. Bring the revised drawing and tracking requirements to ORBRO to define a focused verification scope.
